Volleyball Falls in PSUAC Opener to Beaver

Beaver, Pa. – Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball (1-4, 0-1) opened up Penn State University Athletic Conference action on Tuesday September 19th when they took on Penn State Beaver (5-3, 1-0).

The ladies started out the contest slow as they lost the first two sets of this contest by scores of 25-11 and 25-14 to quickly go down two sets to nothing in the match. However, the PSUGA ladies gave Beaver all they could handle in the final set playing all the way to the end before they eventually lost the match by the score of 25-22.

Kaylee Holtzman (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) lead the offensive attack for the ladies with three kills and eight total attacks. Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) also contributed eight total attacks to go along with two kills. Vazquez Diaz was also a star on the defensive side as she had a team high six digs in the contest with Dolores Kuzmanko (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) coming in behind her with three digs.

This was the second meeting between these two teams in the 2017/18 season and now PSUGA has a record of 0-2 in those matches. Penn State Beaver got the best of PSUGA earlier in the season when they faced off at the USCAA Tournament to start the season where they fell in that contest as well three sets to nothing.

In both matches, the PSUGA ladies were able to fight hard in the third set but came up short both times. They have showed the ability to compete with some of the top teams in the PSUAC. The Lions have competed hard but have to put it all together fundamentally moving forward this season.

The PSUGA Volleyball team is back in action this Saturday September 23rd when they face off against Penn State DuBois in the Wunderly Gymnasium at 1 p.m.
