Volleyball Picks Up Seventh Sweep of the Season in 3-0 Win vs. WCCC

McKeesport, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball Team (9-13, 2-6) picked up their seventh sweep of the season when they defeated Westmoreland County CC (4-18, 2-12) on Monday 3-0. The win broke a four game losing streak, and gave the girls some confidence as they head into their final two Penn State University Athletic Conference games of the season.

The two teams went back and forth throughout the first set battling to a 10-7 score before WCCC called it’s first time out of the night. PSUGA would break away scoring eight of the next 12 points behind another strong night for freshman Alix Ellis (Derry, PA./Derry Area HS) and used it to pick up a 25-12 first set win. PSUGA was looking to continue the momentum into the second set, but WCCC would not go down without a fight.

After jumping out to an early 10-3 lead in the set, WCCC would call a timeout as they tried to regroup. The Wolfpack found themselves behind 23-13 late in the set, but rallied for eight straight points to bring the set score back to within two sitting at 23-21. However, two more service errors for WCCC was enough to give PSUGA the 25-23 set win and a 2-0 match lead. PSUGA dominated in the final set of the night getting out to a 9-2 lead and carrying that momentum through the rest of the set completing the sweep with a 25-14 win.

Ellis finished the night leading the offense with 14 kills on 34 total attacks. Seiblesierra Ili (Barstow, CA./Barstow HS) and Sueriah Timsah (Mesquite, TX./West Mesquite HS) finished right behind her with five kills each in the win. Daisy Pastories (Port Vue, PA./South Allegheny) had a career night picking up three kills on six total attacks.

Defensively, Timsah led the pack finishing with eight digs and Julianna Brill (Mount Jackson, VA./Stonewall Jackson HS) finished with seven. After tearing her achilles tendon earlier in the season, Kimmy Tinker (Ewing, IL./Benton Consolidated HS) made her return to the lineup finishing with three digs.

The win now sets PSUGA up for a late season playoff run. In order to clinch the number four seed, PSUGA needs to beat PSU-Fayette on Wednesday night and then comeback and defeat PSU-New Kensington in their final game of the regular season on Saturday at home. PSUGA only missed the playoffs by a couple of games a season ago and are looking to redeem themselves in 2018.

Next up, PSUGA takes on the PSUAC West’s second place team PSU-Fayette for their final road game of the regular season. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the campus of PSU-Fayette.
