Volleyball Falls in Four Sets

McKeesport, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball Team (2-7, 1-2) fought hard but fell in four sets in their Penn State University Athletic Conference matchup with Penn State Beaver (6-5, 1-2). After falling behind in the first two sets, PSUGA battled to stay alive before dropping the contest.

 

PSU-Beaver pulled out to an early match lead picking up wins of 25-21 and 25-23 to pull ahead to a 2-0 lead. PSUGA would have to fight for their lives in the third set and the comeback kids found a way to turn a 19-8 deficit into a 24-24 tie late in the set. The teams battled to get the two point advantage needed to win the match and PSUGA was able to pull out the win scoring the final two points and winning the set 27-25.

 

PSUGA pulled out to a lead halfway through the fourth set leading Beaver 19-16 late. This time it was Beaver who would fight back to tie the game at 24-24. The two teams again battled to get the two point advantage and this time it was Beaver who fought back and picked up the 26-24 victory.

 

It was a big day for the PSUGA offense with both Alix Ellis (Derry, PA./Derry Area HS) and Kaylee Holtzman (McKeesport, PA./McKeesport HS) setting season highs on the day. Ellis led the team with 16 kills, a new career high, while Holtzman scored 11 kills on the day. Kimmy Tinker (Ewing, IL./Benton Consolidated HS) also set a new career high with 31 digs in the contest.

 

The PSUGA volleyball team has now dropped their last two contests and fall to 1-2 in conference play. During their current four game in seven-day stretch, the team is 0-2 but they return home on Sunday where they have played good volleyball this season. In four home games this year, PSUGA has a 2-2 record and has won seven of the 13 sets played there this season.
