McKeesport, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball Team (2-8, 1-3) fell just short in their Penn State University Athletic Conference matchup with Penn State Fayette (7-6, 3-0) on Sunday getting swept three sets to nothing. PSUGA tried to come back after falling behind early, but they could never catch up in the match.
PSUGA started the first set with the early momentum getting out to an early 3-0 lead in the set. However, PSU-Fayette would rally off seven straight points and never looked back taking the set 25-13. It was much the same scenario in the second set as the two teams battled to a 3-3 tie and Fayette would again get the upper hand scoring 10 of the next 11 points to increase their set lead to 14-4. PSUGA fought back to get as close as 16-12 before Fayette would once again pull away and grab a 25-12 set win scoring the final nine points and taking a 2-0 lead.
PSUGA turned it on in the third set giving PSU-Fayette all they could handle as the teams battled back and forth the entire set. After Fayette jumped out to an 18-14 lead, PSUGA would get their biggest rally of the day scoring five consecutive points on four serves by Kaylee Holtzman (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport HS) to take a 19-18 lead. The fight continued down to the final points of this match, but Fayette came out on top in the end scoring a 25-23 set win and taking the match 3-0.
Alix Ellis (Derry, PA./Derry Area HS) led the team with 9 kills on 29 total attacks while Holtzman followed her with 5 kills in 18 total attacks. Kimmy Tinker (Ewing, IL./Benton Consolidated HS) led the defense with 12 digs and Seiblesierra Ili (Barstow, CA./Barstow HS) led the team with 16 assists on the day.
PSUGA has now dropped their last three contests by the combined score of 10 sets to one 1 and is trying to find a way to get back on track. With only one more game remaining in this seven day stretch where they have played four games, PSUGA will try to get back on a positive note as they push towards the PSUAC playoff race.
PSUGA Volleyball will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Penn State New Kensington. Tip-off for Tuesday’s match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
