Leira Leads the Way with 7th Place Finish at PSUAC Championships

Mont Alto, Pa. – Under cold and windy conditions on Saturday, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Cross Country runners took part in the 2017 Penn State University Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country Championships in Norlo Park near the campus of Penn State Mont Alto.

It was a successful day for PSUGA as Sophomore Fernando Leira (Madrid, Spain/Great Mills) led the way finishing 7th overall with a time of 32:17 over the 8K course. Leira has had a great season as in every race this year he has finished in the top 20 or higher. At the Penn State Mont Alto Invitational earlier in the year, the same place the championships were held, Leira ran the 6K course in 24:13.

Luke Medich (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport) also raced for PSUGA and finished 31st overall with a time of 56:52. Medich has been training under Leira and learning the ropes this season. Medich and Leira have both been running well this season representing Penn State Greater Allegheny.

Even though the PSUAC Championships have come to an end, there is still one more race for Leira and the PSUGA Cross Country Runners. They will travel down to Virginia Beach, Va. on Friday November 10th to take part in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships. It will be a chance for Leira to compete against some of the top runners all across the USCAA to show what he can do.

That race on the 10th is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and is another 8K course. We wish the best of luck to Leira as he competes for one of the top spots in the USCAA.
