Johnston and Newby Earn USCAA Division II Basketball Honors

Newport News, Va. - In the 2016-17 United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Basketball Championship Banquet, junior guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and junior forward Curtis Newby (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) were honored for their effort through the regular season for the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's and men's basketball teams. 

Johnston was the first to be honored in the tournament, as the guard earned Honorable Mention for the USCAA Division II Women's Basketball League. 

Johnston was named to the list after her third season with the blue-and-white. Mandi played in 22 games this season, averaging 34.4 minutes per game, 18 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game. With a total of 397 points, 106 rebounds, 72 assists, 34 steals and four blocks, the guard earned her 1,000th point in a Greater Allegheny jersey this season. Johnston cashed in for 78% (124-of-159) of her free-throws taken and points per game (18) while noting 34.5% (125-of-362) shots from the floor.

Mandi currently sits first in the Penn State University Athletic Conference for completed free-throws (125) and second for free-throw percentage (78%).

Newby was the lone Lion in nominated to the All-American list, earning himself Second-Team All-American for the USCAA Division II Men's Basketball League.

Newby was named to the Second-Team All-American list after his outstanding effort through all 26 games of the season, averaging 33.2 minutes per game. The junior has put down 49.4% (155-of-314) of his shots from the floor and 60.9% (70-of-115) from the foul line. Curtis pulled down a total of 246 rebounds with 382 total points, 48 assists, 47 steals and 33 blocks. The forward has noted a total of 14 double-doubles on the season, a 53.8% chance to record double digits on any given night. Newby currently sits third overall in steals, fourth in blocks and defensive rebounds (170) and fifth in total rebounds.
