Softball drops double header at GA

Lemont Furnace, PA - The Penn State Fayette softball team opened Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) play Tuesday with a pair of losses at Penn State Greater Allegheny.

Fayette (0-6 overall, 0-2 PSUAC) outhit Greater Allegheny (2-2, 2-2) in the opener, 11-9, and took a 2-0 lead into the fifth before falling, 9-2.

Lauran Minerd (Uniontown, PA/Albert Gallatin HS) led the Fayette offensive attack with three hits, including a leadoff triple in the first.  Cassidy Uphold (Grantsville, MD/Northern Garrett HS) singled Minerd in to make the score 1-0.  Then with two outs, Uphold scored on an RBI single by Kayla Zelonka (Vandergrift, PA/Kiski Area HS).

Fayette's 2-0 lead could have been bigger, but it left 11 runners on base in the game.

Greater Allegheny scored three unearned runs in the fifth to take a one-run lead, and a Maura Ryan grand slam highlighted a six-run sixth to put the game away for the hosts.

Zelonka and Kelsey Holp (Grindstone, PA/Frazier HS) each added two singles for Fayette.

In the nightcap, Ryan stymied Fayette over five innings as she threw a one-hitter.  Fayette's lone hit was a first inning single by Lauren Mastowski (Dawson, PA/Frazier HS).

Fayette heads to Penn State Mont Alto (3-1, 2-2), the PSUAC West Division leader, Friday for a double header before the two teams head to Lemont Furnace for a double header Saturday.
