BS splits with GA; misses out on postseason

McKeesport, PA - The Penn State Fayette baseball team had a heartbreaking end to its season Monday night.

Heading into its double header at Penn State Greater Allegheny (14-9 overall, 14-9 PSUAC), Fayette (10-14, 10-13) knew it had to win both games to advance to a postseason game Wednesday.

In the opener, Fayette pulled out a thrilling 11-10 extra inning win in nine innings.  The outcome basically set up a win-and-in scenario in the nightcap for Fayette.

However, Fayette dropped the finale 14-7 and the way Fayette lost reflected a concern coach Mike Sikorski had during the preseason.  Fayette led 7-6 going into the bottom of the sixth inning and needed six outs to advance to the postseason.  However, it gave up eight runs in the frame and GA closed the door on Fayette's season in the seventh.

"We need to go out, compete and finish games," he said. "…if we play routine baseball, we will finish games and if we do this, we will be in a good place."

The season ended short of where Fayette wanted to be, but there is a young nucleus to remember the bitter taste of being so close and coming up short.  This team will be back and will look to make that next step.
