Penn State Shenango endured a difficult afternoon at Eastwood Field on Monday, April 7th, dropping both games of a doubleheader against Penn State Greater Allegheny. Game 1 ended in a 13-0 shutout loss in five innings, while Game 2 was a more competitive affair, but still resulted in a 7-5 defeat.
In the opener, Shenango was unable to capitalize on early base runners, stranding seven men on base and committing six defensive errors that proved costly. Despite collecting six hits—matching Greater Allegheny through the first four innings—the offense couldn't produce a run. Mikey Guarnieri, John Perry, Nate Evans, Josh Day, and Boyd Kurutz each chipped in with singles, but the lineup was held in check by a strong pitching performance from Greater Allegheny's Pierson Buck, who tossed a five-inning shutout. On the mound, starter JA Quahliero (1-1) allowed just three earned runs over 4.2 innings, but defensive breakdowns and a 10-run fifth inning led to an early ending. Relievers Luke Atterholt and Hayden Calenda were unable to stop the bleeding, allowing seven unearned runs without recording an out.
Game 2 saw Shenango bounce back with a more spirited effort. After falling behind early, the Lions responded with a four-run second inning, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Dominic Fornataro and a two-run homer off the bat of Nate Evans. Tyler Evans reached base twice, scored twice, and stole two bases, giving Shenango some spark at the top of the order. Nate Evans also contributed defensively and showed power at the plate, while David Moyer added a hit and a stolen base.
Mason Walker got the start and pitched four innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits. Nick Osborne and Will Perry handled relief duties, with Perry (2-1) ultimately taking the loss after surrendering two unearned runs in the seventh inning. While the offense showed signs of life, the defense again proved problematic, committing three more errors that contributed to Greater Allegheny's comeback.
With the losses, Penn State Shenango falls to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in PSUAC play. The team will look to regroup in the coming days as it seeks to clean up its defensive play and find more consistency on both sides of the ball.
