Mont Alto Baseball Opens Season with Sweep over Penn State Greater Allegheny

BUTLER, Pa. - The Penn State Mont Alto baseball team opened its season with a pair of comeback road wins against Penn State Allegheny, each happening in exciting actions within the closing innings of each contest. Mont Alto won the first game by a 2-1 score and the Nittany Lions followed it up with a 6-5, scoring the winning run within the final inning of play.

Penn State Mont Alto 2, Penn State Greater Allegheny 1 (F)

  • The Nittany Lions saw a fantastic start from Matt Huston (McConnellsburg, Pa. / McConnellsburg) who tossed six innings allowing just one earned run across six innings pitched. He earned his first win of the season, while  striking out six, and Chance McClure (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) tossed a scoreless final inning to earn the save.

  • Mont Alto made the most of playing small ball, Jared Pine (Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan) grounded into a fielder's choice which tied the ball game in the fifth inning.

  • Michael Scott (Accokeek, Md. / Bishop McNamara) came up with a clutch RBI single in which Hayden Kissel (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) scored as that run turned up to be the winning one.

Penn State Mont Alto 6, Penn State Greater Allegheny 5 (F)

  • Late inning heroics, especially a two-RBI double off the bat of freshman outfielder Jonathan Lentvorsky (Shermans Dale, Pa. / West Perry) powered Mont Alto to the sweep in the seventh inning.

  • PSUMA earned a comeback win with three runs crossing the plate against Zach Garlin ( Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) in the first inning but he tossed five innings and struck out six batters in his debut.

  • Hayden Kissel (Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg Area) tossed two innings of relief to hold down the fort with two strikeouts, while also earning the win.

  • Penn State Mont Alto scored in the top of the eighth inning to earn the come from behind win. Michael Scott (Accokeek, Md. / Bishop McNamara) slashed an RBI SAC fly to the outfield that scored the winning run with Jarrett Goodyear (Newville, Pa. Big Spring) crossing the plate.

Penn State Mont Alto returns to action against Penn State York with an away doubleheader scheduled with them on March 17. PSUMA will make their home debut against PSU DuBois on March 21.
