Five Penn State Greater Allegheny Student-Athletes Highlighted by PSUAC

State College, Pa. - Five Penn State Greater Allegheny student-athletes were recognized by the Penn State University Athletic Conference for their performances in their sports in the first week of collegiate play. Two of those student-athletes were also honored in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.

As volleyball took a 3-0 victory over Penn State Beaver this past weekend, both senior middle hitter Alyssa Finocchi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and sophomore setter Adrielle Brisbon (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) are honored as Penn State University Athletic Conference Student-Athletes of the Week for both Hitter of the Week and Setter of the Week.

Finocchi drilled 14 kills and added one service ace over two matches, while also tallying 27 digs and five total blocks - three solo and two assisted. These contributions earned Finocchi her first PSUAC Hitter of the Week.

Brisbon earned PSUAC Setter of the Week, as she compiled 18 assists and 18 digs through two matches, while also landing three kills.

Men's soccer saw a narrow defeat to open their 2014-15 season, Sunday, as Southern State Community College took a 2-1 overtime victory in the final seconds of the extra minutes.

Not only was freshman goaltender Giovianni Vega (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Carlos) awarded with the PSUAC Men's Soccer Goalie of the Week award, but he was also awarded the accolade of USCAA Men's Soccer Goalie of the week for his stand-out efforts over SSCC. In his first collegiate match of his career, Vega saved 11 shots against USCAA member Southern State Community College for a save percentage of .846.

Notching the lone goal of the men's soccer game was freshman midfielder Marin Marina (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), who dashed the net with five total shots through regulation.  Marina was awarded with the PSUAC Student-Athlete of the Week honor for the week of September 2nd.

For women's cross country, sophomore Rachel Ramsey (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) set a career-best at Westmoreland County Community College's 5k course. Ramsey finished first overall with a time of 20:22. This first place finish at WCCC replaced her first course-best time of 20:53, shaving 31 seconds off of the previous milestone.

With her efforts, Ramsey was awarded not only the Penn State University Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week for September 2, but also the same accolade from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
