Fall Semester Brings Big Changes to PSUGA Athletics

McKeesport, PA. – As the summer begins to wind down, things have been heating up at Penn State Greater Allegheny as we prepare for the start of the 2018-2019 school year. Classes begin on Monday and the first PSUGA Athletics event of the year comes on August 31st when the Volleyball team travels to Penn State Beaver for their season opening tournament.

With a new year comes some big changes to the PSUGA Athletics department that will benefit both our student-athletes and their families now and in the upcoming years. From new facilities to new online features in the department, we are always striving to be greater as we look to improve year in and year out.

One of the biggest and newest additions to the PSUGA Athletic Department is the brand-new Strength & Conditioning Room located inside the Wunderly Gymnasium. The new facility features five Olympic weight racks, two flipping tires, ropes, and plates ranging from 2.5 to 55 pounds.

Working with PSUGA Alumni Regis Becker and trainer Kim Ransom, our PSUGA Athletes will learn how to get stronger in the weight room so that they can better succeed in their sport. The Strength & Conditioning room will be open to all students, faculty, and staff during the course of the year from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Another new edition to the PSUGA Athletics Department is the revitalization of the Golf program for the 2018-2019 season. After having a golf program up until 2011, PSUGA has garnered interest from the campus community and will have enough participants to bring the program back.

The team is set to compete in at least four events this season. On September 6th, they will go to University Park to play on their White Course followed by a trip to PSU-Fayette on September 15th to take part in the Fayette Invitational. They end their regular season back at University Park on September 24th to play the Blue Course before finishing with the PSUAC Championships on October 8th.

New assistant athletic director and head men’s basketball coach Tyler Care will serve as the team’s head coach for the 2018-2019 season. An avid golfer himself, Care is excited for the opportunity to get the program back up and running allowing students the chance to pursue the sport of golf. If you have interest in joining the PSUGA golf team, you can contact Care at (724) 777-3646 or by email at tec152@psu.edu.

One of the final big editions to the PSUGA Athletics Department is the creation of a PSUGA Athletics Newsletter for the 2018-2019 year. The newsletter will be sent out every week and include our top stories and news from the week, PSUGA athletes of the week, alumni spotlight stories, weekly schedule, and much more.

When you subscribe to our newsletter, you will also receive updates when one of our student athletes is recognized by the Penn State University Athletic Conference or the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. The PSUGA Athletics season is set to kick off on Friday August 31st when the Volleyball team travels to PSU-Beaver for tournament play. They start the day with a matchup against Carlow at 3:30 p.m. and finish facing The University of Maine at Fort Kent at 8 p.m.
