Baseball Splits Double-Header with Apprentice After Game 2 Walk-off
Vero Beach, Fl- After falling 7-3 in the first game of the afternoon, the Greater Allegheny baseball team used an Oliver Girman (Serra Catholic) walk-off single to lift them to a 5-4 victory in game 2, and a double-header split with Apprentice.
To start game 1, GA got on the board early, courtesy of some heads-up base running. Junior outfielder Mike Visloski (West Allegheny) - who reached on an error- got caught up in a run-down between first and second, but remained mobile long enough to allow Sophomore outfielder Zak Schmidt (Moon) to score from third, before the out was recorded.
GA would earn a 2-0 lead in the fifth, when a lead-off double from Junior catcher Josh Kubisz (Goose Creek) eventually led to an RBI single from Freshman shortstop Tyler Thellman (Blackhawk). The bottom of the fifth, however, would take a serious turn for the worst. A lead-off triple got the Apprentice offense going, and with the help of 3 GA errors, allowed them to score 7 runs in the frame. Sophomore first baseman Adam Wehr (Northwestern) blasted a seventh inning homer to left field, but GA still fell 7-3.
Senior pitcher Jonathan Lutz (West Mifflin) (0-2) suffered the loss, striking out 7 hitters through all six innings. He walked just one, and surrendered 9 hits.
In game 2, GA again got off to a good start, jumping to a 4-0 lead after 2 innings of play. Mike Visloski led off the second inning with a triple, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Freshman Aaron McGee (Penn Trafford). After a Josh Kubisz single and Zach Zeroski (West Allegheny) walk, Zak Schmidt would drive in Kubisz with a single to center field. A wild pitch would then allow Zeroski to score, putting GA up 4-0.
Apprentice would again battle back, scoring two runs in the fifth, and then tacked on another one in the sixth, bringing the score to 4-3. In the top half of the seventh, an Apprentice single, followed by a double to deep center field, tied the game at 4. Pitcher Aaron McGee was able to work his way out of the jam, striking out back-to-back Apprentice hitters to end the threat.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Adam Wehr doubled down the left field line, bringing up pinch-hitter, Freshman Oliver Girman. Girman came through in a big way- lining a single into center field, scoring Wehr from second. GA would walk-off with a 5-4 victory.
Sophomore Tim Connelly (Woodland Hills) started the game on the hill for GA, and pitched 5 strong innings- striking out 3 hitters. Aaron McGee (1-0) picked up the win, striking out 2 hitters over his 2 innings of work. McGee gave up 1 run on 3 hits. Zak Schmidt and Adam Wehr led GA with 2 hits, an RBI, and 1 run each. Josh Kubisz also had a strong game, going 1-3, with a double and a run.
With the split, the Greater Allegheny baseball team now stands at 1-2 on the season. They will return to the field tomorrow, for a 12 PM tilt against Rochester (MI), and then will meet Hagerstown (MD) at 3 PM.
