The PSUGA Baseball Team opens up their home half of the 2018 season with doubleheader action when they take on Fisher College at 11 a.m. PSUGA has faced some tough competition this season and look to continue to succeed.
Mckeesport, Pa. – After having a successful 3-3 run in Myrtle Beach last week, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Baseball Team (3-4, 0-0) opens up the home half of their 2018 season when they face off with Fisher College (10-11, 0-2) on Saturday in doubleheader action. They are facing some of their toughest competition of the season early in the year and head coach Eric Kuczma is excited for his team to get the opportunity to play against these tougher teams early on.
They have performed well against some of the tougher opponents so far this season including putting up nine runs on 13 hits in a game against Mercyhurst to start the season. Over the first seven games of the year, the offense is hitting .302 as a team and is doing a great job of getting on base with a .409 on base percentage.
One of the driving forces of the PSUGA offensive attack early on in the year has been Pedro Escobar (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). Escobar currently leads the team with a .476 average to go along with six RBI. His big game came against Penn State Hazleton where he combined to go 6-7 with five RBI in doubleheader action.
The middle of the lineup has also been able to produce this season as Dylan Ernst (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport), Zack Pollack (Cecil, Pa./Cannon-McMillan), and Josh Arroyo (Tao Alta, Puerto Rico/Levvittown Baptist Academy) have all been able to produce. Ernst leads the team with nine RBI through the first seven games with Arroyo and Pollock right behind him with six and five RBI respectively. The trio has combined to hit .364 (24-66) with 20 RBI through the first seven games and have helped to drive in a lot of the runs that are set up for them.
The pitching staff has been tested early on, but has been able to hold their own against the tough competition. Matt Smith (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) turned in the best start of the season for the staff to this point when he went 7 IP giving up three runs, one earned, while striking out three batters against Lackawanna. Smith is currently second on the team with a 4.00 ERA sitting right behind Matt Givler (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) who has a 3.00 ERA.
Fisher College enters this contest coming off of a 12-4 win over Stratford University last Sunday to break a three-game losing streak. In their 10 wins on the season, they have scored under 10 runs only twice, however, in their 11 loses they have been held to four runs or less seven times.
Saturday will be the first ever meeting between these two teams and it will be played at Pullman Park in Butler, Pa. located at 100 Pullman Park Place. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is set for 11 a.m. and game two will start about a half hour after at around 2 p.m. You can watch all the action live by going to bit.ly/PSUGAYT.
