PSUGA Looks to Rebound Against Grove City
The PSUGA Baseball team is looking for a turnaround after losing their last six contests. Their offense has shown glimpses of greatness and they are looking to get back to that facing their last non-conference opponent of the season.
McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Baseball Team (3-8, 0-0) have faced some tough competition early on in the season and as of late things haven’t been going their way. They have lost their last six games including getting swept in back-to-back doubleheaders against Fisher College and Mercyhurst over the weekend.
Their offense was up and down having glimpses of greatness at times and at other times they couldn’t put anything together. Their best display of the weekend came in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader when they put up five runs in the fourth. Six straight walks to start the inning would bring home the first three runs before Adam Jacko (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) collected the only hit of the inning with an RBI single to complete the rally.
However, in game two of the doubleheader, PSUGA could only muster one hit in the bottom of the first falling 14-0 to the Lakers. The lone hit was courtesy of a single by Dylan Ernst (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) with two outs in the inning. After that, they were retired 1, 2, 3 three times and collected only three other walks on the day to account for all of their base runners.
PSUGA saw their pitching staff turn in some strong performances, but the lack of run support would come to hurt them in the end. Matt Smith (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) continued his dominance on the mound with the best start of the weekend in game one against Fisher College going 6.2 IP giving up five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one. Smith’s ERA now sits at a team low 5.17 on the year and he has performed well in his first three appearances.
After going 3-3 during their trip to Myrtle Beach two weeks ago, PSUGA is looking to get back on track facing another tough opponent in Grove City College (6-8, 0-0) on Tuesday. After having three straight games cancelled, the Wolverines got back to action on Monday when they split a double header with Pitt Greensburg winning the first game 10-5 and falling 4-2 in the second game.
Matt Dayton went 2-3 with an RBI and Micha Burke went 1-4 with 2 RBI to lead the offensive attack in the 10-5 victory. However, in game two the offense could not get going for Grove City when they lost 4-2. Their only two runs came in the bottom of the sixth when they got back-to-back bases loaded walk.
First pitch for Tuesday’s contest is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Jack Behringer Field in Grove City Pennsylvania.
