Butler, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Baseball Team (3-6, 0-0) dropped both halves of a doubleheader in their 2018 home opener falling to Fisher College (12-11, 2-0) 6-2 in game 1 and 10-1 in game 2. PSUGA played Fisher tough in the first game but was never able to get anything going before dropping the second game.
PSUGA saw another great outing on the mound for Matt Smith (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) in game 1 going 6.2 IP giving up five runs on five hits while walking three and striking out one. Smith held Fisher College to just two runs through the first six innings before giving up three in the top of the 7th to take the loss.
It would be the Falcons that would take the lead early in the top of the second when Josh Rogers grounded into a double play that allowed Angel Perez Vargas to score. PSUGA would answer back in the bottom half of the second when Zack Pollack (Cecil, Pa./Cannon-McMillan), after leading off the inning with a walk, came around to score on a wild pitch making the score 1-1.
PSUGA would grab their first lead of the day in the bottom of the 3rd when Adam Jacko (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) delivered with an RBI single that brought home Pedro Escobar (Aguadilla, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). The 2-1 advantage would be short lived as Fisher tied things up in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout that brought the game back even at 2-2.
The score would remain that way until two outs in the top of the 7th when Fisher College got an RBI single from Ivan Rivera and a bases clearing double by Mitchell Lundholm that pushed the score to 6-2. PSUGA would get runners at first and second with nobody out in the bottom of the 7th, but a line out and a double play would end things for PSUGA.
Zach Craven (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) had a big day coming back from injury going 2-3 with two singles. After missing the first seven games of the season, Craven was happy to get back out on the field with his teammates. Pollack also performed well going 2-2 with a walk and a run scored.
Game two saw Fisher College flex their offensive muscles putting up 10 runs on their way to completing the sweep of the doubleheader. They scored at least one run in five of the six innings on the day, including three runs in both the fourth and sixth innings, on their way to the win.
The only run for PSUGA would come in the bottom of the fourth when Pollack hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Zach Ramfos (Harmony, Pa./Seneca Valley) to come home and score from third. Luke Padezan (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) got the start for PSUGA and went five innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on nine hits while walking two and striking out two collecting his third loss of the season.
Jacko was the star offensively of game two going 2-3 from the plate. Dylan Ernst (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) and Josh Arroyo (Tao Alta, Puerto Rico/Levittown Baptist Academy) collected the other two hits on the day each finishing 1-3 at the plate.
