Dominating Pitching and a Hotly Contested Rivalry

(Butler, PA)

Rivalry games always have a little bit extra spice to them. Maybe it's the build up. Maybe it's the anticipation. Maybe it's the cat and mouse.

Today's doubleheader matchup between Penn State Greater Allegheny and Penn State DuBois did not disappoint.

Game 1 Recap:

Game 1 saw 2 dominant pitching performances from Brandon Orsich of DuBois and Matt Smith (North Versailles / East Allegheny HS) of GA. Both threw complete games with Orsich striking out 8 and Smith 3 respectively.

DuBois got on the board first when Daniel Stauffer scored on a GA throwing error by Douglas Painter (Warren, OH/ Eastern Gateway CC). Stauffer had doubled earlier.

DuBois stretched things to 3-0 with 2 RBI singles in the top of the 3rd.

GA wouldn't go quietly even though the bats didn't quite get going in Game 1. Douglas Painter singled and Brian Koglin (Fox Chapel, PA / Fox Chapel HS) doubled to make things 3-1.

The rally would end there. Final 3-1 DuBois.

News and Notes:

Brian Woods (North Huntingdon, PA/ Norwin HS) threw out 2 runners stealing. Despite the loss, Matt Smith boasts a 1.61 ERA in 28 innings pitched this season.

Game 2 Recap:

Nathan Grice (Mckeesport, PA/ McKeesport HS) was dealing in Game 2. Grice went 6 1/3, striking out 8, and giving up only 1 earned run and is coming off a week where he was named PSUAC and USCAA Pitcher of the Week.

Jordan Williams (Mckeesports, PA/ Mckeesport HS) would come on and earn his second save of the season.

How did it all happen? A slow drip of the faucet.

GA got on the board in the bottom of the 1st. Justin Schneibner (Sunrise, FL/ Piper HS) came on to pinch run for Brian Koglin. Schneibner advances to third on a Tyler Elliot (Irwin, PA/ Norwin HS) single. GA had runners at the corners and a called double steal from the coaching staff with Schneibner and Elliot ends with Schneiber scoring to take GA up 1-0.

Brett Yuhas (Munhall, PA/ Steel Valley HS) would score twice, once in the bottom of the 3rd, and again in the bottom of the 5th. DuBois would get one back in the top of the 6th. A sacrifice fly from Nick Krevo (Irwin, PA/ Norwin HS) would get first year player Michael Galterio (Youngstown, OH/ Poland Seminary HS) home from 3rd in the bottom of the 6th pushing things to 4-1.

Things would get a little dicey in the Top of the 7th for GA. DuBois would load the bases with 1 out. Pitcher Jordan Willams would get 2 DuBois players to pop out to end the game.

Final score, GA 4-2.

News and Notes:

This was the first GA win over DuBois since March 30, 2018.

These two teams face off in second part of the home and home doubleheader, April 18, 2021 at 1pm in DuBois.
