PSUAC Nail-Biter Ends in a 83-81 GA Men's Basketball Upset

McKeesport, Pa. - Through forty minutes of back-and-forth action, the Penn State Greater Allegheny men's basketball team ran out of time as Penn State Schyulkill came to Wunderley Gymnasium to overcome the home team, 83-81.

Freshman guard Jashuan Fontanez (Downingtown, Pa./-) dropped the first points for the home team before freshman guard Terance Wroniak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) achieved a lay-up, Schyulkill up 7-4 just a little over two minutes in. Freshman guard Khari Hicks (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian) and freshman forward Eddie Davis (Philadelphia, Pa./Roxborough) matched one another with a layup as Fontanez completed both free-throws, GA trailing 17-10.

Freshman guard Tony Patterson-Brown (Philadelphia, Pa./Roxborough) marked a pair of layups split up by a Fontanez layup. Senior forward Petrie Addison (Fort Myers, Fla./Florida Christian) slashed a free-throw as freshman guard Antonio Lucic-Jozak (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) checked a layup and a pair of free-throws with just seven minutes until halftime.

Lucic-Jozak drained a three-pointer as Patterson-Brown added a pair of free-throws to bring the game to a Schyulkill lead 32-26. Hicks put up a free-throw before Patterson-Brown dropped a huge trey to bring the game within two. Addison and Hicks made lay-ups before Patterson-Brown laid on a three-pointer to take the lead 37-36 GA with less than two minutes until the break. Schyulkill managed two free-throws to take the lead for the half, 38-37.

Fontanez dropped a jumper to start the second-half as Hicks marked a layup and a three-pointer to keep Greater Allegheny trucking. Davis added a layup before Fontanez reigned Schyulkill closer with a three-pointer, the away team ahead 51-49. Patterson-Brown hammered a three-pointer and a free-throw before Addison dumped on seven points. Patterson-Brown added two foul shots while Fontanez and Addison put up two apiece to tie the game at 66.

Hicks and Addison matched one another with a layup as Fontanez added two made free-throws. Schyulkill began to pull away a bit before Patterson-Brown drilled another three-pointer to tally the score 76-75, Schyulkill. Addison and Wroniak marked points before Hicks knocked down a three-pointer to bring the score to its final tally, Schyulkill ahead in the PSUAC match, 83-81.

Patterson-Brown dropped 50% (4-of-8) of his shots from outside the arc while banking 83.3% (5-of-6) of his shots from the foul line, as the freshman dropped 21 points with seven rebounds. Addison added 16 points with 14 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks. Hicks and Fontanez matched one another with 15 points and four rebounds through the contest.

As a team, Greater Allegheny dropped 71.4% (15-of-21) from the foul line while knocking down 40.3% (29-of-72) from the floor. GA out-rebounded Schyulkill, 52-43 through the match. PSUGA converted 40 points in the paint, 22 points off second-chance and eleven points off turnovers.

Greater Allegheny (6-13, 3-7 PSUAC) will continue Penn State University Athletic Conference action, Sunday afternoon, as Penn State Brandywine comes to Wunderley Gymnasium. A double-header with the women, the men are set to tip-off around 3 p.m.
