DuBois, Pa. - With nine-straight DuBois points in the overtime period, the Penn State Greater Allegheny men's basketball team went on to suffer their first Penn State University Athletic Conference loss of the season, Friday night, by a margin of 87-80.
Greater Allegheny jumped out to a 7-0 lead with deposits from junior guard Jeremy McMunn (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) and senior forward Jumanne Butler-McDaniel (Franklin, N.J./Cardinal McCarrick). Junior forward Curtis Newby (Sharon, Pa./Sharon) and Butler-McDaniel marked points in the paint before sophomore forward George Prota (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) put up four points. Junior guard Khari Hicks (East Hills, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) slashed a three-pointer and a layup as DuBois jumped out in front, 26-20.
Butler-McDaniel, Newby and sophomore guard Jordon Payne (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) put up points in the paint as Payne marked three more outside the arc, GA swiping the lead back 29-26 with five minutes until halftime. Newby added a point from the free-throw line before McMunn hit back-to-back three-pointers, closing the first half of action, 36-30 Greater Allegheny.
Butler-McDaniel put down four points in the paint as Prota and junior guard Denzel Boyer-London (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) surplused GA with points from the foul line. McMunn drained another trey while Newby zipped up five points, 50-43 Lions.
Prota and McMunn both contributed four points each as freshman guard Colby Hall (Hampstead, Va./Dinwiddle High) marked points from the foul line as well as the paint, 65-57 with five minutes remaining in regulation. Prota and Newby scored before McMunn hammered another three, 73-66. DuBois' Sam Roselli accounted for seven straight as Payne accounted for just a single free-throw, DuBois working their way back to tie the game at 74.
Prota put up four in the overtime period as Newby marked two points in the paint before fouling out of the contest. DuBois rode out the win from the foul line, taking the PSUAC victory 87-80.
Newby marked a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards with four steals and an assist. McMunn shot 50% (5-of-10) from outside the arc, noting 21 points and five steals. Prota accounted for 17 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, two assists and a steal while Butler-McDaniel added 11 points, five steals, three assists and three boards.
As a team, Greater Allegheny was out-rebounded 45-34 as DuBois coughed up the ball 26 times. The men shot 57.9% (11-of-19) from outside the arc while shooting 41.9% (31-of-74) from the floor. The Lions marked 40 points in the paint while noting 28 points off turnovers and 15 points off second-chance.
Greater Allegheny (7-4, 3-1 PSUAC) looks onward to a United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) weekend at Penn State Beaver, Saturday the 17th. SUNY Delhi comes to Beaver for a 5 p.m. contest.
