Murphy’s Strong Showing Leads Golf into New Kensington Invitational

McKeesport, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Golf team entered Saturday’s PSU-Fayette Invitational intending to lower their scores as the season moved on. Freshman Sean Murphy (Churchill, PA./Woodland Hills HS) did just that dropping his score by 10 points, and looks to do it again when he leads PSUGA into the Penn State New Kensington Invitational on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Murphy led the way last time out, finishing as the only PSUGA golfer to hit under the 100 stroke mark, finishing tied for 19th overall scoring a 90 on the par 71 course. After a rough outing at the PSU-DuBois Invitational, Saturday was a chance for Murphy to get back on track as the team approaches the Penn State University Athletic Conference Championships in just 20 days.

Another PSUGA Golfer who drastically improved was freshman Alex Myers (Oswego, NY./Oswego HS). Myers has gotten better in every invitational this season and posted the best score of his collegiate career shooting a 123 on Saturday. For Myers, it was about getting into a groove and he has seemed to hit his stride lowering his season average to 128.7 and has shown the most growth on the team this season.

As PSUGA currently sits, they would have three golfers qualify for the PSUAC/United States Collegiate Athletic Association Championships, which would be the second-most in program history. However, they have a fourth golfer on her way up with freshman Angie Nylander (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward HS) sitting just six strokes away from qualifying with a season average of 111.3. Nylander posted her highest score of the season on Saturday shooting a 113 but looks to get back on track for Tuesday.

Tuesday’s Invitational will be held at The Links at Spring Church Golf Course located in Apollo, PA. The course is a par 72 course featuring 6,512 yards of playing surface. The course features challenging, yet fun holes designed to test each player’s skill. The par 5’s on hole nine and hole 15 will offer a challenge to players and will create a competitive environment throughout the day.

Tee time for Tuesday’s PSU-New Kensington Invitational is scheduled for 10 a.m.
