Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny softball opens up their 2013-14 season on the road at Carlow University, where GA drops two by the scores of 8-0 and 8-2.
Senior pitcher Samantha Segiel (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) started the first game on the bump for Greater Allegheny, as the veteran allowed just five hits through six innings. Sophomore outfielder Shelby Bendick (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport Area) singled to open up the game for Greater Allegheny, that being the lone hit of the first match-up. Greater Allegheny went on to fall 8-0 after six innings of play.
Bendick saw time both in the field and on the mound, as the sophomore pitched game two for Greater Allegheny. A scoreless first inning led up to Greater Allegheny making the first notches on the board. Junior infielder Kelli Hall (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) walked to get on base before junior infielder Jordyn Holsing (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) singled, putting two on base. Senior infielder Casey Naylor (Glassport, Pa./South Allegheny) obtained a single as both Hall and Holsing cross home plate, Greater Allegheny ahead 2-0.
GA was leading until Carlow's Young belted a grand slam home run, Carlow now up 4-2. The home team managed two more tallies in both the fourth and fifth inning to end their scoring run at 8-2.
Holsing finished at the plate by going 2-for-3 and one run marked on the board. Naylor went 1-for-2, batting in two runs.
The Greater Allegheny Lions host not only their first home meeting of the new season, but also their first Penn State University Athletic Conference match-up. Penn State New Kensington comes to Woodland Hills High School on Saturday afternoon for a double-header. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
