GA Softball Prepares for Busy Stretch, Eyes Post Season

Mckeesport, PA

There is a saying often said in the summer of, "We're entering the Dog Days of Summer". You probably heard your grandparents say this as a child. The "Dog Days of Summer" is the hottest period of the calendar year.

Translate that expression to the current softball season and things are really starting to heat up on the field and the push for the post-season.

Greater Allegheny enters a stretch of games this week playing 6 games in 4 days and thoughts of the PSUAC post-season dancing through their minds. They currently sit in 3rd place in the PSUAC West and a strong showing this week would help solidify things.

"This is a huge stretch of games for us.", said Head Coach, Danielle Kochka. "These games can have a big factor in deciding who makes the playoffs this year.", she added.

GA travels to division leader, Penn State Mont Alto on Wednesday for a doubleheader and Penn State Fayette on Friday, April 9 for another away contest. Greater Allegheny returns home on Saturday, April 10 for a return doubleheader at Renzie Park vs Fayette.

Sitting at 5-5 overall and 5-5 in the PSUAC, GA split a weekend doubleheader with Penn State New Kensington.

A strong performance from Tara Love (Chandler, AZ / Campo Verde HS) who threw a complete game, 7 inning, 3 strikeout performance in game 1, leading Greater Allegheny to a 4-1 victory. Alyssa Guzzie (Pittsburgh, PA / Fox Chapel HS) added 2 RBI's and Ivy Mervis (Pittsburgh, PA/ Taylor Allederdice HS) 3 hits in the win.

GA was cruising in game 2 until a series of errors led to things unraveling and a 4-3 walk off loss to New Kesington in game 2.

Still, GA is knocking on the door of a postseason appearance.

"If we can take at least 4 out of 6 games this week, we will put ourselves in a great position to make the playoffs this year.", said Kochka.
