Poupakis' Late Bucket Lifts Women's Basketball Over Hazleton

Hazleton, Pa- Sophomore Guard Monica Poupakis (West Mifflin) has been a nice addition to the Greater Allegheny line-up since she joined the roster back in early December, but her brightest moment came over the weekend. Her shot-clock-beating basket with just 9 seconds remaing in the game, coupled with a last-ditch defensive stand, propelled the GA women to a 45-42 win over PSUAC adversary, Penn State Hazleton.

Poupakis was among three GA women to score in double-figures, as she posted 11 points on the day.  Sophomore Guard Megan Brinkos (McKeesport) and Freshman Guard Jasmine Williams (East Allegheny) both also scored 11, with Brinkos completing the double-double, adding 14 rebounds.  Freshman Forward Christina Floyd (St. John Neumann) continued her dominance on the glass, grabbing 14 rebounds while chipping in with 8 points.

A sloppy game throughout, the two teams combined for 51 turnovers (GA:32, Hazleton: 19) with GA shooting a paltry 21% from the field (12-56).  The women would make up for their poor shooting performance by hitting 18-19 from the foul line.

With back-to-back PSUAC victories over the weekend, the Greater Allegheny women now stand at 8-10 overall, and have improved to 7-3 in conference play.  The GA women have also won 6 of their last 7 PSUAC games.  Hoping to continue their hot play, the women return to the court Tuesday January 31st, for an important PSUAC contest against Penn State Fayette. Tip is at 6 PM.
