Dunmore, Pa. - Coming off a huge win the day before, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team rode out a 91-60 victory over Penn State Worthington-Scranton, Saturday afternoon, achieving their second-straight Penn State University Athletic Conference triumph.
Senior guard Nakayla Layne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and senior power forward Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./Sts. Neumann-Goretti) dropped the first six points of the game within a minute to come up on Worthington-Scranton, 6-0. Freshman guard Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) hammered a ringer of a three-pointer as freshman guard Teona Cash (McKeesport, Pa./Woodland Hills) added a free-throw, GA ahead 10-5.
Floyd put down a set of jumpers as Layne went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Freshman guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) posted two jumpers while Floyd added a jumper and a free-throw, Greater Allegheny leading 23-8. Layne completed another set of foul shots from the line and a jumper alongside M. Johnston and senior forward Kimberly Hall (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) adding jumpers themselves, 31-11 GA.
Worthington-Scranton gained momentum and started to come back to Greater Allegheny with seven minutes left in regulation. Cash, Floyd and Layne all post jumpers for Greater Allegheny before M. Johnston, Cash and Carswell each recorded a pair of free-throws. T. Johnston made a jumper as freshman forward Morgan McCallister (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) marked the final points for the first-half of action, the visiting team ahead 47-32.
Layne was the first to tally points for GA, posting a jumper. Cash completed a jumper and one before M. Johnston, Layne and Floyd achieved two points apiece, Greater Allegheny leading 58-35. M. Johnston hammered down a three-pointer before T. Johnston marked a jumper just five minutes into the second-half. Layne, Hall and T. Johnston continue to drive on Worthington-Scranton to post jumpers in the Lions favor, 71-42.
M. Johnston and Cash continue to add on jumpers while T. Johnston put down a three-pointer, Greater Allegheny in the drivers seat, 80-46. Floyd surplused GA with two completed free-throws before T. Johnston made another three-pointer with just six minutes left in regulation. Floyd and Layne dropped a jumper each as M. Johnston drop the final tallies of the contest from the foul line, Greater Allegheny earning their second-consecutive PSUAC win, 91-60.
Layne dropped 22 points as she went 64.3% (9-for-14) from the floor and a perfect 100% (4-of-4) from the free-throw line. Floyd posted a double-double to boost her team up and over Worthington-Scranton, as she earned 17 points and 14 rebounds with two assists and one steal. M. Johnston also posted 17 points with a perfect 100% (4-of-4) from the foul line. T. Johnston contributed 15 points with three rebounds and two assists while Cash put up 12 points with six rebounds, five assist and three steals.
As a team, Greater Allegheny downed 44.3% (35-of-79) of their shots taken from the floor while they added 60.7% (17-of-28) of their shots taken from the free-throw line. Greater Allegheny strong-armed the ball, as the home team out-rebounded Worthington-Scranton, 53-32. GA posted twenty points on second-chance alongside eleven off of turnovers.
The Greater Allegheny women (7-13, 6-6 PSUAC) take a week's break before their next meeting. On Saturday February 7th, Penn State Fayette comes to Wunderley Gymnasium for a Penn State University Athletic Conference match-up. The women are set for tip-off at 6 p.m.
