Greater Allegheny Women's Basketball Oust Wilkes-Barre, 71-53

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team opened up a Penn State University Athletic Conference weekend at Penn State Wilkes-Barre, where GA came out victorious, 71-53.

Freshman guard Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) kicked-off the game with a three-pointer for the visitors. Senior guard Nakayla Layne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) slashed a jumper before T. Johnston hammered down another trey, stretching GA ahead of Wilkes-Barre, 8-6.

Freshman guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) made a jumper before sophomore guard Tra-Esha Carswell (Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) tacked on a pair of jumpers. Freshman guard Teona Cash (McKeesport, Pa./Woodland Hills) completed two free-throws before senior forward Kimberly Hall (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) notched a jumper. Layne matched Hall's jumper before T. Johnston hit down another trey. Senior power forward Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./Sts. Neumann-Goretti) notched on a pair jumper, GA leading 27-17.

T. Johnston and Floyd put up a jumper apiece to keep Greater Allegheny chugging along. T. Johnston dumped another three-pointer and a jumper before Hall added a jumper herself, 38-17 GA. M. Johnston downed a free-throw as Carswell made a jumper. Cash made the last points of the first half, Greater Allegheny leading Wilkes-Barre, 43-24.

M. Johnston downed a jumper to open up the second half of play for the two teams. Floyd drained three jumpers while M. Johnston drained a set of jumpers herself, extending the Greater Allegheny lead to 55-30. T. Johnston put up a jumper before Floyd hammered a three-pointer, topping off a twenty point lead over Wilkes-Barre.

Floyd dumped on another set of jumpers before Carswell added a foul-shot, moving the score to 65-44 with seven minutes left to play in regulation. Layne and M. Johnston dumped on a jumper apiece as Layne polished off two free-throws from the away team, 71-51. M. Johnston tallied the last points for Greater Allegheny with a jumper, ending the Penn State University Athletic Conference match-up with a GA victory 71-53.

Floyd recorded yet another double-double, as the power forward netted 19 points and 14 rebounds, shooting 69.2% (9-of-13) from the floor. T. Johnston added 18 points with three steals, two rebounds and two assists. M. Johnston dumped on eleven points aside from her six assists and five rebounds.

As a team, Greater Allegheny shot 36.1% (30-of-83) from the floor while the massively out-rebounded Wilkes-Barre, 57-32. GA managed 34 points off turnovers while dropping 17 points on second-chance.

Greater Allegheny (6-13, 5-6 PSUAC) goes back on the road for another PSUAC match-up, Saturday afternoon. The women start the double-header at Penn State Worthington-Scranton at 1 p.m.
