Greater Allegheny Women's Basketball Drop Two on the Road

McKeesport, Pa. - Through two United States Collegiate Athletic Conference road games, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team dropped a 86-48 decision to Southern Maine CC on Saturday before they succumbed a 73-50 loss to Central Maine CC, Sunday.

On Saturday, SMCC jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead before sophomore guard Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) dropped a layup and sophomore guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) added a free-throw. Freshman guard Brianna Williams (Pittsburgh, Pa./University Prep) added a jumper before T. Johnston drained a three-pointer, 14-8 SMCC.

Williams completed a pair of free-throws before M. Johnston dropped a jumper. Junior guard Jess Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Serra Catholic) posted two points on free-throw as Southern Maine continued to chip away, holding GA to 14 as they swelled to 38.

Freshman guard Chelsy Ware (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) broke the silence with a jumper before Manfredi added two more off of a foul. T. Johnston dropped another trey before Ware bucketed two free-throws, heading into the half with a Southern Maine lead 45-23.

Williabucms was first on the board in the second half as Southern Maine continued to inflate their margin. M. Johnston and freshman forward Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) added tallies off of free-throws as both M. Johnston and T. Johnston laid points in the paint, SMCC leading 55-32.

M. Johnston surplused the Lions with two points off free-throws as Ware posts a jumper. T. Johnston lofts a three-pointer and a jumper before Ware answered for Greater Allegheny with a pair of jumpers and a free-throw. T. Johnston added the final points with a layup for the blue-and-white, as the visiting team dropped their first game of the roadtrip, 86-48.

T. Johnston contributed 17 points through game one with four rebounds and a steal while Ware added 11 points, five boards and two steals. Burroughs pulled down eight rebounds through the contest while Manfredi completed all four free-throws attempted.

As a team, Greater Allegheny outshot Southern Maine from the free-throw line (15-for-22). 

Day two brought Central Maine Community College in Auburn, Maine for a 12 p.m. tip-off.

T. Johnston was the first to score for Greater Allegheny with a jumper before Manfredi drained a three-pointer, 5-6 CMCC. Ware got on the board with a jumper before Central Maine swarmed the remainder of the first quarter, 20-7.

The second quarter brought heat from the Johnston sisters, as Tori achieved a three-pointer before Mandi dropped a layup and one, wrapping up with another Tori trey, 26-16 CMCC. Manfredi bucketed a three-pointer before M. Johnston rode out the scoring summary until halftime with a jumper and a three, 37-24 home team.

The second half started with a Burroughs made layup and M. Johnston exploding with the next eleven points of the quarter, including a three-pointer. After three quarters, Central Maine lead Greater Allegheny, 54-37.

The final ten minutes of action for the weekend started off with a pair of M. Johnston completed free-throws and a five point spurt for T. Johnston. Williams and M. Johnston matched one another with layups before T. Johnston s made a layup lashed a free-throw. Williams added the final tally of the game with at the line, finishing the contest in a 73-50 Central Maine advantage.

M. Johnston dropped seven from the floor while making 100% (7-for-7) of her free-throw attempts, depositing 23 points with five assists and four boards. T. Johnston contributed 14 points, three boards and three steals. Manfredi and Burroughs both pulled down six boards a piece.

Greater Allegheny (1-3) look to travel to Pitt-Titusville, Wednesday evening, for a 5 p.m. non-conference match-up.
