GA Women's Hoops Wrap up 48-44 PSUAC Win over Schuylkill

Schuylkill Haven, Pa. - In a slow-moving Penn State University Athletic Conference bout, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's basketball team took a 48-44 decision over Penn State Schuylkill, Saturday afternoon.

Freshman forward Tiajuanna Burke (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) made a jumper to start the action for GA as sophomore guard Mandi Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) slashed a trio from the foul line. Sophomore guard Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) denoted a jumper to ride out the first quarter of action, 11-7 Schuylkill.

Junior guard Tra-Esha Carswell (Homestead, Pa./Steel Valley) laid on a jumper before M. Johnston extended the lead with a made three-pointer. Junior guard Jess Manfredi (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Serra Catholic), T. Johnston and Burke all dropped jumpers to send the two teams into halftime, 22-20 Schuylkill.

Burke placed two foul shots as Carswell laid on a pair of jumpers before the two teams squeaked into the fourth quarter, 29-26 Schuylkill.

Burke and M. Johnston put up jumpers to tie the game at 32 before Carswell pushed it over with two good free-throws. M. Joohnston added a free-throw before she nailed a trey, 38-37 with just five minutes remaining in regulation. T. Johnston placed a jumper as Manfredi capitalized on six free-throw points. M. Johnston secured the win with a pair from the foul line, Greater Allegheny in front 48-44.

M. Johnston dropped 60% (6-of-10) from the foul line as she added 16 points, four boards, four assists, one steal and one block. Burke put up nine rebounds, eight points and one steal. Manfredi added eight points with five boards and three assists. Carswell came off the bench for ten rebounds and eight points.

As a team, Greater Allegheny (9-14, 5-8 PSUAC) out-rebounded Schuylkill 36-32 with 66.7% (16-of-24) of their shots completed from the foul line. The women finished nine points off turnovers with five second-chance points.
