Women's Volleyball Falls at Home

McKeesport, Pa- The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women's Volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-20) loss at the hands of visiting Southern State CC.

In the first set, the Greater Allegheny women failed to keep up with the scoring pace of the Patriots. Unforced errors doomed the Lady Lions, as they were beaten 25-13.

In set 2, Greater Allegheny came out firing. The Lady Lions would jump out to an early 6-1 lead. Southern State CC would battle back however, tying the score at 7. After some great back and forth play, including a 17-17 tie, Southern State CC would begin to pull away. The Patriots rattled off an 8-1 run to end the set, with a final score of 25-18.

The 3rd and final set featured Southern State CC jumping out to a seemingly insurmountable, 10-0 lead. But Greater Allegheny showed tremendous poise, and then began a scoring run of their own.  After getting down 24-12, the Lady Lions came storming back with an 8-0 run, to make the score 24-20. However, the thrilling final set would come to an end, as the Lady Lions committed an unfortunate service error. Southern State CC would hold on to a 25-20 win, clinching the match.

Despite the loss, many Greater Allegheny women posted solid matches.  Freshman Megan Carroll (Ramona Convent) led GA with 6 kills, while adding 3 digs. Freshman Alyssa Finocchi (Baldwin) had 5 kills, 3 assists, and 6 digs, while fellow Freshman Audra Besnak (Steel Valley) added 3 kills, 5 assists, and 6 digs.

With the tough loss, Penn State Greater Allegheny drops to 1-5 on the season, with their next match coming Wednesday September, 14 against visiting Penn State Fayette. The match tips off at 7:00 PM.
