Women's Volleyball Earns Second Consecutive PSUAC Split

Uniontown, Pa- The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women's Volleyball team earned its second straight PSUAC victory with a win over Penn State York, 3-1 (25-17, 13-25, 25-21, 25-17). The GA women would then drop its second match of the day, 3-0 (25-5, 25- 13, 25-20), to Penn State Mont Alto.

In the first set against Penn State York, the Greater Allegheny women started strong out of the gate.  GA would push ahead 15-9, on a key Kill from Freshman Corinne Wilson (Bethel Park).  Penn State York would not get much closer, as Greater Allegheny cruised to a 25-17 victory.

The second set would turn out quite the opposite for the Greater Allegheny women.  Penn State York would jump ahead 8-3, before Freshman Alyssa Finocchi's (Baldwin) three straight Service Aces would bring GA to within two, at 8-6.  That's the closest York would allow Greater Allegheny to get, as it dominated the rest of the match, coasting to a 25-13 win.

Greater Allegheny would get back on track in the third set.  Two Kills from Corinne Wilson, and a Service Ace from Freshman Christina Floyd (St. John Neumann) put GA up 11-4 early. Penn State York would grind its way back to 14-11, before Alyssa Finocchi buried a Kill, ending the York scoring run.  A second run from York would eventually tie the score at 17.  GA would then counter with a run of its own, and held on for a 25-21 victory.

In the fourth and eventual final set, Greater Allegheny would gain an early 7-1 lead. They would never surrender the lead, and were in control 20-9, late in the set. A 25-17 win would earn GA the 3-1 victory, its second straight win.

A strong Greater Allegheny attack was led by Alyssa Finocchi and Corinne Wilson, who each drilled 11 Kills. Finocchi would also add 7 Service Aces and 6 Digs.  Freshman Audra Besnak (Steel Valley) chipped in 7 Assists and 8 Digs.

The second match of the day would not go as swimmingly for the Greater Allegheny women. Penn State Mont Alto was strong in all 3 sets, sweeping the match. Despite the sweep, GA performed well, led by Alyssa Finocchi's 4 Kills. Junior Helena Vasser knocked in 2 Kills and had 9 Digs.

With the split decision, the Penn State Greater Allegheny Women's Volleyball team now holds a 3-11 overall record, and is 2-5 in the PSUAC. The next opponent for GA will be a trip to take on Penn State Fayette, Saturday October 1, at 12:00 PM.
