Greater Allegheny Volleyball Sweeps Penn State DuBois

McKeesport, Pa. - The ace-achieving Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team went on to take three sets (25-7, 25-14, 25-8) from conference foe, Penn State DuBois, on Wednesday night in Wunderley Gymnasium.

The first run of the first set belonged to DuBois, but junior middle hitter Alyssa Finocchi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) scored two points to bring GA ahead. Sophomore outside hitter Kayla Franklin (Detroit, Mich./Thurston) matched her and achieved an ace and a kill to bring GA up, 8-5. From there, Greater Allegheny rained aces. Sophomore right side Krystal Waller (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) contributed four aces to swell GA 15-6. Junior middle hitter Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./St. John Neumann) closed out the impressive set, also striking down four aces, 25-7.

In the second set, we saw more action from freshman setter Adrielle Brisbon (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly), as she went on to earn three aces and one kill. She also assisted five points in this set. Finocchi also had a good set as she managed three aces, three solo blocks, six attacks and two kills. Floyd also contributed two aces and a kill. Freshman outside hitter Raven Gribbins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oyler) played a good set, as she assisted her team with one ace and three kills. PSUGA came out victorious in the second set, 25-14.

The third set opened up with three consecutive aces drawn from freshman outside hitter Brianna Audette (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville). Two kills from Finocchi brought GA to a quick 5-0 lead that the team would have the rest of the set. Waller added an ace to make the score 10-4. Four more aces were tallied to Gribbins, as she went on to make the score 20-6. Franklin, Finocchi, Brisbon and Waller all registered points to take the team to their first conference win, 3-0.

Top earners of the day came from Finocchi, as she finished the game with ten kills, 18 attacks, five assists, three aces, eight digs and three solo blocks, and Brisbon, as she finished with five kills, seven attacks, 13 assists, four aces, and three digs.

Greater Allegheny next hosts Penn State New Kensington for conference play on Tuesday, September 24. Tip-off is set for 7 PM.
