Greater Allegheny Volleyball Suffers in Close Battle over WCCC, 3-0

McKeesport, Pa. - In a point-for-point contest, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team went on to fall in a valiant effort against the visiting Westmoreland County Community College Wolves Thursday night in Wunderley Gymnasium.

WCCC gased up to a 0-4 lead to open up the first set. Junior middle hitter Alyssa Finocchi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and freshman setter Adrielle Brisbon (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) paired up to bring GA even with WCCC at a 5-5 mark. Junior middle hitter Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./St. John Neumann) added another tally with a block, taking GA's first lead of the game, 6-5. For the remainder of the set, the play was back and forth.  Evenly competed, GA went on to drop 25-22.

In the second set, we saw contributions from sophomore Kayla Franklin (Detroit, Mich./Thurston), who had eight attacks and freshman Raven Gribbins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oyler), who posted six attacks and seven digs. Brisbon, Finocchi and Floyd all had a hand in this close match-up. Though Greater Allegheny was in sight the whole set, WCCC advanced 25-21.

Throughout the third set, Finocchi and Floyd both strengthened the offensive side of the ball with eight attacks apiece. Finocchi registered four kills alongside Brisbon's seven assists to stay in contention with the Wolves. Floyd received a ball from Brisbon to tie the score at 15 each. From that point,  WCCC pulled away and only allowed the Lions to achieve three more points. GA succumbed to WCCC, 25-18.

While the Lions begin to shake this off, the look onward to prepare for the weekend. Greater Allegheny will host both Penn State Brandywine and Penn State Schuylkill on Saturday. Play is set to begin against Brandywine at 2 p.m.
