GA Volleyball Takes Two on a Four-Game Road Trip

Scranton, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team went on the road this past weekend to compete in four matches; two at Penn State Worthington-Scranton and two at Penn College.

Saturday brought on the two games at Scranton. Greater Allegheny played the home team first. In the game, the court heard from each of the GA teammates. GA managed to complete 24 kills off of their 38 total attacks. Freshman setter Adrielle Brisbon (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) impressively assisted 18 of those 24 kills. Junior heavy hitter Alyssa Finocchi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) served nine aces, half of the team's total for the game. Greater Allegheny coasted past their conference match-up, 3-0 (25-13, 25-10, 25-14).

GA moved on to their next conference match-up against Penn State Wilkes-Barre. In this meeting, the GA Lions made it hail aces, as the team achieved a season-high 28 over the duration of three sets. Senior Audra Besnak (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) added twelve of those aces to the tally. Again, Brisbon helped out her team and set 14 of the 20 kills. Finocchi notched 6 of her 7 total attempts for points. GA took all three sets with scores of 25-8, 25-5, 25-11. Greater Allegheny closed the first day of competition 2-0.

Penn State Greater Allegheny next traveled to Penn College for a new day with new competitors.  GA went up against Penn State Hazleton for their next conference contest. This game went neck-and-neck, as Hazleton narrowly took the first two sets. GA came out guns blazing to take the third set as well as send it into extra points, 29-27. Huge numbers were produced by the GA Lions, as the match went into four sets. Finocchi achieved 15 kills, 20 digs and two aces. Junior middle hitter Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./St. John Neuman) got up to finish 13 kills and dig four balls. Brisbon also had an impressive game, as she assisted 23 kills to help out her team. Unfortunately, Greater Allegheny's valiant efforts were not enough as they fell in the fourth and final set.

To close the weekend, Greater Allegheny faced the home team, Penn College. All three sets were very close. The first set went point-for-point between the two PSUAC foes, sending the set into extra points. Penn College came out victorious, 26-24. GA came out hot in the second set, hungry for a win. Through close battling and strong strategy with the ball, the GA Lions dashed to a 25-22 drop in the second set. Penn College kept the steam roll going, as they took GA 25-17 in the last set, closing the game at 3-0. Finocchi earned 17 kills and 12 digs in the contest. Brisbon again on fire with her assists, setting 22 of the 24 kills achieved in the game. Five Lions worked their way into the double digits when recording digs.
