Greater Allegheny Starts off 2014 at USCAA Tip-off Tournament at Penn State Beaver

Monaca, Pa. - The Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team opened up their 2014-2015 athletic season on Friday and Saturday, as GA finished 1-3, 1-0 PSAUC at Penn State Beaver in a USCAA Tip-Off Tournament.

To open up on Friday, Greater Allegheny dropped three sets to United State Collegiate Athletic Association foe Rochester College (25-10, 25-10, 25-14). GA bounced back in the next contest over Penn State Beaver, as Greater Allegheny swiped all three sets from the Penn State University Athletic Conference rival (25-18, 25-16, 25-15).

Sitting at an even 1-1 after day one, Greater Allegheny faced Robert Morris University-Springfield to open up Saturday's play. GA battled through three sets with the branch campus, 25-18, 25-15, 25-17, taking a 3-0 loss.

Penn State Greater Allegheny finished the day with going up against Alfred State. It was difficult to get a run going for the Lions, in turn falling to the Pioneers 3-0.

On Saturday, senior middle hitter Alyssa Finocchi (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) recorded 14 kills, 50 total attacks, two assists, 27 digs, three block solos and two block assists over six sets. Sophomore setter Adrielle Brisbon (Fort Washington, Md./Friendly) contributed three kills, 14 total attempts, 18 assists and 18 digs though five sets.

Freshman right side player Emily Taylor (Aliquippa, Pa./Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter) hammered eleven kills, 38 total attacks, four assists, 18 digs and two block assists over six sets on Saturday. 

Senior middle hitter Christina Floyd (Philadelphia, Pa./Sts. Neumann-Goretti) contributed four kills, 19 total attempts, four block solos and five block assists through six sets. Freshman right side Laura Vazquez (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) pushed 30 total attempts, two kills, 22 digs and one service ace through two complete matches.

Greater Allegheny looks onward to Tuesday, as Penn Highlands comes to Wunderley Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
