GA Volleyball Drops to WCCC, 3-1

McKeesport, Pa. - Despite a hard-fought third set, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team hosted Westmoreland County Community College, Friday night, where WCCC came out on top three sets to one.

The contest began back and forth, as the scoring tally went from WCCC to GA back to WCCC. The first set went hard fought, as GA placed six kills through 19 attempts; WCCC on top in set one, 25-17. Through the second set, Greater Allegheny managed to put down ten kills but still came up short, 25-13. Greater Allegheny rallied and fought back through the third set, as GA overcame WCCC by a tally of 25-23. The fourth and final set brought hope, but Westmoreland County Community College stepped on the gas and took their third set over the home team by a 25-20 margin.

Sophomore middle hitter Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) finished the night with 12 total kills on 34 attempts alongside eight digs and one service ace. Sophomore libero Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) placed 12 kills through the four sets, with eleven digs, one service ace and one assist. Freshman setter Courtney Shadd (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett) dished out 23 assists, three service aces, two digs and one block. Freshman middle hitter Chelsy Ware (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy), junior outside hitter Jasmine Holtz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) and freshman outside hitter Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) all placed kills for Greater Allegheny, as Ware put down two blocks and Holtz obtained a service ace.

The Greater Allegheny Lions (0-5, 0-3 PSUAC) travels to Penn State DuBois, Sunday afternoon, to get back into Penn State University Athletic Conference action. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
