Greater Allegheny Volleyball Swipes a Pair of PSUAC Victories

McKeesport, Pa. - In Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball lone Penn State University Athletic Conference quad-match of the season, GA marked a 3-1 win over Penn State Hazleton before they took a 3-0 triumph over Penn State Lehigh Valley, Saturday afternoon. 

Through game one against Penn State Hazleton, sophomore outside hitter Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) got up for 17 kills, six service aces and eleven digs. Sophomore outside hitter Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) put down 16 kills with 12 service aces, six digs and an assist to boost her teams efforts. Freshman setter Courtney Odell Shadd (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett) assisted 33 kills, while she posted seven service aces, two kills, one block and one dig. Freshman middle hitter Chelsy Ware (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) lifted her team with five service aces, six digs and two blocks.

Greater Allegheny took the first set by a 25-11 margin while Hazleton managed to overtake set two by a tally of 25-21. Sets three and four belonged to Greater Allegheny, as they were victorious by scores of 25-16 and 25-15, respectfully.

The second game of the day for Greater Allegheny was against Penn State Lehigh Valley, who has not won a PSUAC match yet.

The Greater Allegheny Lions took all three sets by leads of 25-16, 25-15 and 25-17.

Vazquez Diaz posted 21 kills for an overall hitting percentage of 31.7%. She also placed nine service aces, five digs and one assist. Shadd moved the ball for 18 assists with ten service aces and a kill. Johnston put down seven kills with eight service aces and six digs. Ware boosted her team with four service aces, two difs and a kill to overcome the PSUAC foe.

With the pair of victories, Penn State Greater Allegheny moves up in the standings to 4-5, 5-3 PSUAC. The ladies look forward to Sunday afternoon, as they travel to Penn State Beaver for another quad-match. The women are set to play Penn State Worthington-Scranton at 12 p.m. and then follow up with a match against Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
