GA Lions Split a 1-1 Sunday at Penn State Beaver PSUAC Quad-Meet

Monaca, Pa. - In a two-game outing for the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team at Penn State Beaver, the GA Lions took a 3-2 victory over Penn State Worthington-Scranton 3-2 before dropping to Penn State Wilkes-Barre 3-1.

Greater Allegheny swarmed Worthington-Scranton through set one as the ladies took the first bout 25-9. WS edged GA out through set two by a tally of 25-18 before GA rallied back in set three, 25-15. Worthington-Scranton then overcame the GA Lions in set four 25-17 before Greater Allegheny took the game winner in the final set, 15-9.

Sophomore outside hitter Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) posted 21 kills with 25 digs while contributing one block, assist and service ace each. Sophomore outside hitter Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) put up 19 kills with 14 digs, five service aces and an assist in the Penn State University Athletic Conference victory.

Catapulting the win was freshman setter Courtney Odell Shadd (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett), who put up 12 service aces while placing 35 assists, two blocks and a kill. Freshman middle hitter Chelsy Ware (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) placed 11 service aces, five digs, two blocks and a kill.

Greater Allegheny took on Penn State Wilkes-Barre in game two. The back-and-forth contest went in Wilkes-Barre's favor in set one 25-22 before Greater Allegheny came back to win set two in extra play, 27-25.  Set three also went back-and-forth as Wilkes-Barre edged out GA 26-24. Wilkes-Barre was too much to overcome in set four, Greater Allegheny dropping 25-17.

Shadd put up 29 assists with ten digs and seven service aces through the four sets. Johnston placed 15 kills, 12 digs and four service aces while Vazquez Diaz added 13 kills, 19 digs, seven service aces, a block and an assist. 

Greater Allegheny was scheduled to play Penn State DuBois, Tuesday, but GA took the conference win due to DuBois forfeit. Greater Allegheny (5-6, 6-4 PSUAC) will host Penn State Beaver, Friday evening, in Wunderley Gymasium. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
