Greater Allegheny Women's Volleyball Ends Season on the Road

McKeesport, Pa. - Through three Penn State University Athletic Conference matches, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team wrapped up their 2015-16 on the road at both Penn State York and Penn State Brandywine.

On Saturday, Penn State York forfeit the match, giving Greater Allegheny the 1-0 PSAUC advantage. In the second scheduled match of the day, Greater Allegheny went up against Penn State Mont Alto.

The three sets were decided 25-16, 25-9 and 25-14, a 3-0 Mont Alto decision.

Sophomore middle hitter Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) placed six kills, ten digs, two sevice aces and an assist through the contest. Sophomore outside hitter Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) put down five digs, three kills, three assists and two service aces to assist Greater Allegheny through the afternoon.

Freshman setter Coutney Shadd (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett) lofted six assists, seven digs, three service aces and a block on the day while freshman middle hitter Chelsy Ware (Pittsburgh, Pa./Imani Christian Academy) got down for six digs.

Greater Allegheny moved on to Penn State Brandywine the following day for a double-header Penn State University Athletic Conference Pink Out, recognizing breast cancer awareness.

The first match of the day went up against PSUAC unbeaten Penn State Brandywine. Greater Allegheny fell in three matches all by tallies of 25-15.

Johnston hammered eight kills, ten digs and eight kills through game one. Shadd assisted ten kills while putting down six digs and three kills herself. Vazquez Diaz got down for nine digs, three service aces and two kills while Ware posted four digs and two kills.

Freshman defensive specialist Jasmine Holtz (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brashear) placed two kills and a dig while sophomore outside hitter Ellen Garcia (Philadelphia, Pa./Mastbaum AVTS) got on the board with two digs.

The final contest of the season came to GA as Penn State Schuylkill came to the court. The 3-0 Schuylkill victory was decided by tallies of 25-17, 25-15 and 26-24.

Vazquez Diaz contributed 12 kills, nine digs, two assists and a service ace through the loss while Johnston added seven kills, five digs, five assists and a service ace.

Shadd put up 14 assists with four service aces and two digs while Ware got up for two blocks. Freshman middle hitter Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) added two digs and a kill for the Greater Allegheny offense.

Greater Allegheny wrapped up their season with an overall record of 5-11, 7-9 PSUAC.

Johnston is currently in second place in kills per set with 3.27 while Vazquez-Diaz is right behind her in third witn 3.07. For season kills, Vazquez is sitting in the PSUAC standings in fourth place with 166 total kills while Johnston is just behind her with 157. Shadd is sitting in fourth place in the PSUAC with assists per set, averaging 5.15. Both Shadd and Johnston find themselves on the PSUAC service aces per set list, with Shadd in second with 1.35 while Johnston has .96 in fifth place. Shadd also sits on the USCAA standings with her service aces per set, second place with 1.35.
