Lion Women's Volleyball Splits to Start PSUAC Schedule

McKeesport, Pa. - With a 3-1 win over Penn State DuBois and a 3-0 drop to Penn State Fayette, the Penn State Greater Allegheny women's volleyball team started their 2016-17 Penn State University Athletic Conference schedule off with a overall 1-1 record.

In the first game over DuBois, the first, second and fourth sets were in Greater Allegheny's favor, 25-19, 25-18 and 25-23.

Junior outside hitter Laura Vazquez-Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) got down for a team-high 13 digs, 12 kills and one assist. Junior right side Emily Taylor (Aliquippa, Pa./Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter) downed 11 digs with eight kills, three service aces and two assists. Sophomore setter Courtney Odell Shadd (Hanover Park, Ill./Bartlett) put up 27 assists through the four sets with eight digs, four service errors and a block assist.

A few days later, Greater Allegheny traveled to Penn State Fayette, where the ladies fell by a margin of 3-0. The string of sets were determined by margins of 25-10, 25-6 and 25-13.

Junior outside hitter Tori Johnston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) got down for eleven digs while Vazquez-Diaz matched her eleven and threw in six kills through the action. Freshman defensive specialist Hayley Maksin (Port Vue, Pa./South Allegheny) added five digs while both Taylor and sophomore middle hitter Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) both tallied three each.

The Lions (2-3, 1-1 PSUAC) look forward to hosting Penn State Beaver, Saturday afternoon, for another PSUAC match-up. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
