McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball Team (1-3, 0-0) gets set to open up Penn State University Athletic Conference Play on Tuesday September 19th when they travel to take on Penn State Beaver (4-3, 0-0)
PSUGA volleyball picked up its first win last time out when they took on Westmoreland County Community College in their first home game of the 2017/18 season winning the match three sets to one. Head Coach Alyssa Finocchi was happy with her teams play and the way they were able to buy into the system.
Freshman Dolores Kuzmanko (Penn Hills, Pa/Penn Hills) was all over the court and set-up her fellow teammate’s well collecting 20 or more sets in each of the four sets played against WCCC. Marina Puharre Selmi (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Objectivo) and Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Marina Montessori) led the charge on the offensive side averaging around six attacks per set.
The win gave the PSUGA volleyball team some momentum as they now open up conference play against a tough adversary in Penn State Beaver Volleyball. Beaver has played seven matches this season and has a record of 4-3.
These two teams have met up once this year already while taking part in the USCAA Tip-off Tournament hosted by Penn State Beaver. In that match, Penn State Beaver took all three sets and handed PSUGA their third loss of the season. However, in that match, PSUGA showed that they can beat Beaver after taking the third set of that match 25-23.
The all-time series since the 2011/12 season has been dominated by Penn State Beaver as they have a 10-3 record in 13 matches against PSUGA. However, with only three returners from last year’s team, PSUGA is trying to turn the tides and swing the momentum back in their favor.
The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. on the campus of Penn State Greater Allegheny. The women’s next home game will be on Saturday September 23rd when they face off against another conference opponent in Penn State Du Bois at 7 p.m.
