Monaca, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny volleyball team (0-0, 0-2) got their 2017/18 season kicked off on Saturday as they traveled to the Penn State Beaver Tournament where they played two games dropping both contests three sets to zero to kick off the season.

The first match was against Volleyball powerhouse Rochester College where they dropped the three sets by scores of 25-8, 25-3, and 25-12. While the first two sets didn’t go the Lions way at all, they fought hard in the final set before eventually falling. The Lions were able to fight hard against a tough opponent and it gave the women a chance to face one of the top teams in college volleyball to help them prepare for opponents they will face in the Penn State University Athletic Conference later this year.

The ladies would then look for a chance to rebound as they took on Penn State Fayette in the latter half of the tournament, but would fall once again three sets to nothing. It was the first time that this year’s team has gotten to face off against a conference opponent and they competed very well losing the sets by the scores of 25-16, 25-12, and 29-27. They were almost able to rally back and win the third set but it would be Penn State Fayette that drew final blood as they collected the two points needed to defeat Greater Allegheny.

This year’s Greater Allegheny volleyball team features a core of young players who are anchored by senior outside hitter Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori). Vazquez Diaz is coming off of an all-PSUAC season and is looking to help lead the Lions to a second straight PSUAC playoff berth. Greater Allegheny was knocked out of last year’s playoffs in the first round by Penn State Mont Alto as they lost three sets to one.

Greater Allegheny is back in action for day two of the Penn State Beaver Tournament when they are slated to face off against Penn State Beaver on Saturday September 2nd at 10 a.m. at the Gary B. Keefer Wellness Center.
