Volleyball Ends Weekend on a High Note

York, Pa. – It was a big weekend for the Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball team (3-8, 2-5) as they had two Penn State University Athletic Conference tri-matches this weekend. On Saturday, they took on Penn State Brandywine (13-2, 7-0) and Penn State Schuylkill (4-6, 2-3). Then, they traveled to York, Pa. on Sunday to battle Penn State Mont Alto (8-2, 6-1) and Penn State York (0-7, 0-7).

The weekend started out on a good note as PSUGA would split their contests on Saturday losing to Brandywine three sets to nothing, but coming back and picking up the victory over Schuylkill three sets to one. On Sunday, the results were very similar as PSUGA dropped their first match to Mont Alto three sets to one and came back to beat York three sets to nothing to complete the weekend split.

The PSUGA ladies have shown the ability to compete with some of the top talent in the PSUAC in the early parts of this season, and in the wins they were able to put it all together for a full game and come out on top.

The win over PSU-Schuylkill victory showed that PSUGA had the talent and the ability to play a full match as they played one of their best matches of the season to get their second win of the season. In the win over PSU-York, it was the serving game that came through as the team combined for a total of 14 service aces in the contest over the three sets. The three sets to nothing win was the ladies first clean sweep of the 2017/18 season.

Hayley Maksin (Port Vue, Pa./South Allegheny) and Laura Vazquez Diaz (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Cupey Maria Montessori) lead the offensive charge averaging over 15 total attacks per game each. Dolores Kuzmanko (Penn Hills, Pa/Penn Hills) lead her team averaging seven digs per match over the weekend.

PSUGA will have just a couple of days to recover as they continue their 2017/18 season on Thursday when they go on the road for a non-conference match-up against Westmoreland County Community College at 6 p.m.
