PSUGA Volleyball Looks for Momentum in Final Week of the Season

McKeesport, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball Team (8-13, 2-6) is looking to pick up some momentum as they enter the final week of the season taking on Westmoreland County Community College (4-17, 2-12) on Monday at 6 p.m. After a 3-0 loss to Penn State DuBois their last time out, PSUGA now needs to win their final two conference games to be in the hunt for a Penn State University Athletic Conference Playoff Spot.

They dropped Saturday’s contest by scores of 25-11, 25-23, and 25-20 as DuBois completed the sweep and continued their dominance of the PSUAC this season. After falling behind early, PSUGA just did not have enough in the tank to complete the comeback. They played one of their best sets of the season in the second set, but were unable to finish the comeback.

With the loss, PSUGA has now dropped their last four games dating back to October 5th 2018. With three games, two in conference, left on the schedule, PSUGA would have to win their final two conference games against Penn State Fayette on October 17th and Penn State New Kensington on October 20th to make it as the number four seed in the PSUAC Tournament.

Westmoreland County CC is coming off of a 3-0 loss at the hands of Garrett College on Saturday. Chelsey Frock led the Wolfpack with four kills on 10 total attacks and Hope Hixon led the defensive side of the ball with five digs on the day and Maddie Lorince led the team with two assists.

After a strong start to conference play this season that saw them go 2-2 to start conference play, injuries hurt them as they dropped their last four conference games. Their strong point of the season came at the PSUAC Crossover Tournament at Penn State Fayette where they went a perfect 4-0 and only loss one set over the course of the weekend.

The all-time series between PSUGA and WCCC is tied with both teams getting six wins over the previous 12 match-ups. PSUGA evened the all-time match-up their last time out with a 3-0 win at WCCC. Alix Ellis (Derry, PA./Derry Area HS) was a key factor in the win continuing her strong freshman campaign that sees her leading the team with 145 kills in 16 matches played.

Tip-off for Monday’s game is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside the Wunderly Gymnasium. There are only two volleyball home games left so come on out and support the volleyball team as their season comes to an end.
