After Stumble, PSUGA Volleyball Tries to Get Back on Track vs. Beaver

McKeesport, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Volleyball Team (2-6, 1-1) has a chance to rebound on Saturday when they take on Penn State Beaver (5-5, 0-2) at 2 p.m. PSUGA took a tough loss on Wednesday to Penn State University Athletic Conference rival Penn State DuBois and are looking to bounce back and get back in the win column.

It was a competitive match early on, on Wednesday when the teams battled trying to gain the advantage in the first set. PSU-DuBois would take advantage with a 29-27 set one win before going on to win the final two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-14 on their way to sweeping the match. Alix Ellis (Derry, PA./Derry Area HS) continued her offensive success coming up with a team leading 10 kills on 28 total attacks to lead her team.

Wednesday’s game started a tough stretch for the PSUGA Volleyball team that will see them play four PSUAC games in seven days with all those games coming against PSUAC West opponents. However, three of those four games are being played at home where PSUGA has a record of 2-2 and has won seven of 13 sets played inside the Wunderly Gymnasium this season.

PSUGA’s home court has also been a welcome place for some of the team’s top offensive weapons. In the teams first four home games, Ellis has recorded 43 kills on 98 total attacks in four games played as opposed to just 22 kills on 91 total attacks in her four road games this season.

Saturday’s game will see PSUGA go back on the road against a PSU-Beaver team that is on a little bit of a roll having won two of their last three games. They defeated Carlow on Thursday in a non-conference matchup 3-1. After dropping the first set 25-21, Beaver would rally back in the match taking the last three sets by scores of 25-21, 25-12, and 25-20 to score the victory. Beaver’s Brooke Tomasko had a big day finishing with 12 kills on 29 total attacks in the win.

PSUGA is looking to turn things around in the all-time series with Beaver where they have just a 4-15 record. PSU-Beaver won all three matchups between the two teams last season, however, PSUGA gave them a run for their money in the last match of the season dropping the match 3-2. Beaver got the early advantage in that match before PSUGA fought back to take a 2-1 lead. Beaver would finish the match taking the last two sets and picking up the win.

Tip-off for Saturday’s match is scheduled for 2 p.m. on the campus of Penn State Beaver. PSUGA will return home on Sunday for a match against PSU-Fayette that will tip-off at 2 p.m.
