Cross Country Enters Wolfpack Invitational With Eyes on Qualifying
The PSUGA Cross Country team runs in their second meet of the year at the Wolfpack Invitational on Saturday. After just missing qualifying for the USCAA National Championship, Max Shugerman and Eladia Kennedy have their eyes on the prize this meet.
McKeesport, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Cross Country team is set to run in the Westmoreland County CC Wolfpack Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m. They come into the meet with their sites set on qualifying for the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships after nearly doing so in their season opener a week ago.
Junior Max Shugerman (Turtle Creek, PA./Woodland Hills HS) just missed the qualifying mark at the Father Bede CC Invitational running a 6.6-kilometer time of 26:35.1. He finished 21st in the field out of 40 runners and set a good mark for the season as he continues to improve his time each time, he hits the course.
Eladia Kennedy (Pittsburgh, PA./Imani Christian Academy) impressed in her first collegiate Cross Country event finishing the 5K race in 30:08.3 minutes coming in 29th out of 38 runners. For Kennedy, the first race of the season was a confidence boost showing her that she can compete at the varsity level. She held her own against top talent from NCAA Division III, NAIA, USCAA, and NJCAA and will only continue to improve as the season moves forward.
With one race under their belts, PSUGA now has its marks to beat as they continue trying to improve in every single race. They set their marks on one of the toughest courses they will face all season long and will take what they learn into Wolfpack Invitational.
They will make the trip out to Youngwood, PA. where they will run through the rolling hills of the Westmoreland County CC campus competing against seven teams from the USCAA and NJCAA. The men and women will both run 5K races making both courses a little shorter than the team’s previous time out.
The day will start with the women’s race at 9 a.m. followed after by the men’s race at 9:45 a.m. The event will be held at the Westmoreland County Community College Campus in Youngwood, PA.
