Two Top Ten Finishes Lead PSUGA at Mont Alto Invitational
The PSUGA Cross Country team had two top-ten finishers as they ran in the PSU-Mont Alto Invitational on Saturday in a PSUAC Championship Preview.
Mont Alto, PA. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Cross Country team competed at the PSU-Mont Alto Invitational on Saturday against competition from the United States Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA Division III, and NCAA Division II. They had two top ten finishers leading the way with each runner coming in with their best finishing times of the season.
For PSUGA, it was a preview of what they could expect at the 2019 Penn State University Athletic Conference Championships on October 26th as they were running the same course that will host that event. Head coach Greg Schmitt said that it will allow his guys to see and run the course beforehand so they know what to expect as they head into the championships in October.
It was the women’s side that led PSUGA on the day when Eladia Kennedy (Pittsburgh, PA./Imani Christian Academy) led the way finishing 7th with a time of 31:55 in the 6K race. It was Kennedy’s first 6K race of the season and she averaged a season-best 8:30 second mile setting her up for success with three more meets left this season.
On the men’s side, junior Max Shugerman (Turtle Creek, PA./Woodland Hills HS) also found himself finishing in the top ten running his 8K race at 31:11. Shugerman is looking to represent PSUGA well at the PSUAC Championships and finished in fourth place among his fellow PSUAC Competitors.
Both runners proved they had what it takes to run the difficult course that Norlo Park challenges. Both finished in fourth place among their PSUAC competitors and look to continue to improve on their times as the season moves along. With one more meet to go before the PSUAC Championships on October 26th, it will be the final tune-up as the team looks for its first PSUAC top ten finisher since the 2017 season.
The PSUGA Cross Country team is back in action when they head to the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Saturday, October 12th, at 10 a.m. The race will be run in Pittsburgh’s Schenley Park.
