Brandywine Tops GA In Doubleheader Sweep

MEDIA, Pa. -- Penn State Brandywine continued its winning ways in Penn State University Athletic Conference softball by sweeping Penn State Greater Allegheny by scores of 10-3 and 9-1 on Friday afternoon.

Game One: Penn State Brandywine 10, Penn State Greater Allegheny 3

Brandywine found itself trailing 3-0 early before errupting for 10-straight runs to claim a victory in game one.

Karly Rees (Oxford, Pa./Oxford) and Crystal Cassario (Levittown, Pa./Pennsbury) recorded back-to-back singles to open the second inning and both came around to score on Becky Valente's (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) two-base hit to draw Brandywine within one. Three batters later, Meghan Ferry (Gloucester City, N.J./Gloucester City) worked a bases-loaded walk to force in the game-tying score.

Brandywine added three more runs in the third to take the lead for good. Another Valente double pushed Cassario across with the go-ahead run, while two more runners scored when Gianna Terpolilli (Hammonton, N.J./Our Lady of Mercy Academy) delivered a two-out single through the middle.

Ferry tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Destiny Brophy (Bristol, Pa./Bristol) stole home in the fifth to up the margin to 8-3. Rees finished off the scoring one frame later by driving in Payton Landis (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) with a triple and scoring via wild pitch.

Brophy, Rees, Terpolilli and Valente all tallied two hits for the Lions, who collected 13 overall. Brophy scored three runs, while Valente drove in three.

In addition to a 1-for-3 day at the plate, Cassario pitched all seven innings to earn her ninth win of the season. She struck out seven, while allowing three runs (one earned) on eight hits.

Game Two: Penn State Brandywine 9, Penn State Greater Allegheny 1

Brandywine scored six times during the first two innings to take control early in the nightcap.

Cassario's two-run double accounted for the Lions' first-inning runs, while Rees cleared the bases with a two-base hit and scored on Landis' single in the second.

Rees crossed home on Taylor D'Attilio's (Hammonton, N.J./Cedar Creek) groundout in the fourth to up the Lions' lead to 7-0.

Greater Allegheny got a run back in the sixth, but Brandywine scored twice during the bottom of the frame to end the game by run rule. Rees legged out an inside-the-park home run to right field, her first home run of the year, while Terpolilli walked and later scored via error to wrap up the game.

Rees added two more hits for a four-hit day, while knocking in four runs and scoring four times. Cassario added two hits and two RBI and Landis tallied two hits and stole a base.

Maddie DeFazio (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) fired all six innings during her first start of the year to earn the win in the circle. DeFazio limited GA to one run on six hits, while fanning four.

Brandywine (18-8, 8-0 PSUAC) is back in action Thursday at Neumann for its final non-conference test of the year.
