Shenango Sweeps Opening Saturday

Penn State Shenango Baseball opened their inaugural season with a road sweep of Penn State Greater Allegheny on Saturday afternoon.

Greater Allegheny jumped out to a four-run lead through two innings in Game 1 before RBIs by Kaleb Gorichky (Sharpsville), Nick Osborne (Hickory), and Gabe Yanssens (Shenango) knotted the score back up. "GA" retook a one-run lead heading into the top of the 7th, but the Shenango offense awoke in their final at bat. Shenango would score four runs to take an 8-5 lead, and then a Grand Slam from Gorichky broke the game wide open. Shenango would go on to win, 12-7.

Gorichky led the offensive output, going 4-for-4 with 6 RBIs.  JA Quahliero notched the first hit in program history in a 3-for-5 effort and drove in two runs of his own.
Nate Evans (Countryside, FL) started on the mound for Shenango, going three innings and giving up six hits.  The win was earned by Luke Atterholt (West Middlesex), who came on in relief in the 4th inning.

The bats stayed hot in Game 2 of the doubleheader as a bases-clearing double by Mason Bevan (Lakeview-PA) ignited a five-run first inning for Shenango. Despite a late surge by Greater Allegheny, Shenango managed to keep the pedal down. They scored four runs in the top of the 7th to close out the game, winning 11-6.

Dante Micaletti (New Castle) went 3-4 at the plate while John Perry (Anclote, FL) had two hits, including a triple, and drove in three. Nick Osborne started on the hill for Shenango, going five strong innings while striking out five and walking none.

Shenango will have an eight day break before taking on Westminster for a scrimmage in New Wilmington, PA on Sunday, February 18th at 1:00 PM.
