McKeesport, Pa. – The Penn State Greater Allegheny Women’s Basketball Team (0-2, 0-0) is looking for a turn-around performance after dropping each of their first two games of the season. They will get a chance to do that on Wednesday, but it will be no stroll in the park as they face off against Point Park (2-1, 0-0) at 6 p.m. as the first half of a Men’s and Women’s Basketball doubleheader.
PSUGA could not find their shot from the floor last time out as miscues sank them against SUNY Delhi on Sunday 74-45. The ladies shot just 25% from the floor (19-76) and 8.3% from beyond the arc (1-12). This would ultimately be there downfall as they allowed SUNY Delhi a lot of offensive opportunities and they took advantage of it.
Despite the score, however, there were still some good individual efforts in the contest. Andrea Burroughs (New Rochelle, Ny./New Rochelle) picked up her first double-double of the 2017/18 season as she lead the team in both points (15) and rebounds (11). Early on in the season, Burroughs is ranked third in the league in FG% shooting 47.4% and is tied for fourth in rebounds per game with 12.
Alex Hall (Washington, D.C./Bell HS) also played a great game especially on the defensive side of the ball. She finished second on the team with 10 rebounds before she eventually fouled out late in the contest. Hall collected six defensive rebounds to tie her for the team lead and four offensive rebounds, which was second behind Burroughs.
PSUGA is trying to find the offense it had in their first game of the season when they put up 69 points and sent BCCC into overtime before falling 74-69. Jayla Ellis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) put up 27 points in that effort, the highest point total so far. It is going to take another offensive effort like that and then some as PSUGA heads into this matchup with Point Park.
Point Park enters the contest having won each of their last two games since dropping their opener to Lawrence Technical University. Point Park is averaging 64.6 points per game entering the contest including a 72-68 victory against Georgetown College last time out. Baylee Beluca was the leader in that game with 12 points and a team high 22 rebounds in the victory.
These two teams have met up twice in the past with Point Park taking both of the contests. Their last meeting came just a year ago with Point Park coming out on top 79-36. Prior to that contest, the teams had not met since the 2012/13 season.
Wednesday’s Women’s Basketball action is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. in the Wunderly Gymnasium. Be sure to stick around afterwards as the Men’s Basketball team plays Point Park in their half of the double-header 30 minutes after the finish of the Women’s Game.
